Offthetopofmyhead Designs Logo and Graphic Identity for ‘Blue & Brew’
Offthetopofmyhead has designed the logo and visual identity for Blue & Brew, the newly renamed and renovated café at the University of Cambridge Sports Centre.
The updated branding will be showcased on signage throughout the café, as well as on items like coasters, menus, and various other merchandise.
“Blue & Brew is a clever and distinctive name, and the café’s logo needed to make the most of its alliteration and rhyme. ‘Blue’ is a reference to Cambridge Blue. Not many organisations can claim ownership of a colour, but Cambridge Blue is world-famous. It’s been Cambridge University Boat Club’s principal colour since 1934 and is seen by over 100 million people who watch the iconic Boat Race every year,” explains John Spencer, founder and creative director of Offthetopofmyhead.
Adding: “Blue & Brew’s logo was influenced by condensed typefaces commonly associated with sporting events and the stencil typefaces on sacks of coffee. The connection and flow between the two words is accentuated by the way their colours come together inside the stencil-styled ampersand.”
The identity also features a collection of promotional fixed phrases, known as ‘word partnerships,’ designed to resonate with the café’s logo aesthetics.
This latest branding project is one of several that John Spencer and his agency have completed for the world-famous 815-year-old institution, having previously redesigned Cambridge University Boat Club’s logo in 2020 and designed the University of Cambridge Athlete Performance Programme logo in 2021.
He also refreshed the University’s heraldic logo in 2008 when he created a university-wide publications system.
